Exmoor Pony Enthusiasts
Exmoor Pony Breed Standard

As defined by the Exmoor Pony Society of Britain

Breed Characteristics:

Colour:   Brown (dark to light) with mealy ‘markings’ on the muzzle, around the eyes and along the under belly. Dark brown / black mane, tail and lower legs.

Size:    The preferred height range is: 11.2 hh to 12.2 for mares and 11.3 hh to 12.3 hh for stallions and geldings.

Head:    Wide forehead with prominent eyes. Fleshy eyelids described as the "hooded eye". Deep jaw and broad muzzle. Ears are short and well haired.

Body:   Neck is set on well laid back shoulders. The chest is deep, wide and the ribs well sprung. The back should be short and ending with a low set tail. A group of short hairs known as the "snow chute" is grown each Autumn at the base of the tail.

Legs / Action:   The cannon bones are very substantial and strong. The hooves are of the finest hard "slate-blue" horn. Straight and true with no paddling is the action. The trot is amazingly smooth and they posses an almost cat-like ability to jump.

Coat:    Sleek and close in summer the winter coat is double layered and has no shine. A soft undercoat provides insulation while the outercoat of coarse hairs sheds water from the pony.

General:    The overall pony should reflect balance and symmetry with a definite pony character.
